RELIABILT Decking

Composite and aluminum deck railing systems, post caps, deck lights, posts, sleeves, and balusters. Everything you need for a complete deck railing project. Available in white, black, and bronze finishes at Lowe's.

RELIABILT decking products cover the complete deck railing system: rail kits, post caps, deck lights, posts and sleeves, and balusters. Available in composite (wood-plastic composite) and aluminum materials. Standard 36" rail height meets residential building code. Compatible with Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon decking boards. Sold at Lowe's in individual components and bundled kits.

A deck railing project involves more than just the rail sections. You also need posts to anchor the railing, post caps for a finished look, and balusters to fill the space between top and bottom rails. RELIABILT offers each component separately so you can mix materials and finishes, or buy complete kits that include everything for one section.

If your deck project includes a new entry point to the deck, see our patio and exterior door guide for sliding glass doors and French doors that open onto a deck. For finishing the transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, RELIABILT moulding and trim covers thresholds and door casings.

Building Code

Deck Railing Code Requirements

Most residential building codes based on the IRC (International Residential Code) require deck railing when the deck surface is 30 inches or more above grade. Key requirements that affect your product selection:

Rail height36" minimum for residential decks (42" for commercial). RELIABILT standard rail kits are 36". Check local code, as some municipalities require 42" for all decks.
Baluster spacingMaximum 4" gap between balusters. A 4" sphere must not be able to pass through at any point. RELIABILT kits are pre-spaced to meet this requirement.
Post spacingMaximum 6ft to 8ft on center between posts, depending on local code and railing material. Aluminum can span farther due to higher rigidity.
Top rail loadMust withstand 200 lbs concentrated load applied in any direction at the top rail. RELIABILT systems are tested to meet or exceed this requirement.
Bottom rail clearanceNo more than 4" gap between deck surface and bottom rail. Some codes require 2" or less in snow-prone areas.
Stair railingRequired on any stairway with 4 or more risers. Must be graspable (1.25" to 2" diameter round or equivalent).

Check Local Code First

Building codes vary by municipality. Some areas require 42" railing height for all decks, stricter baluster spacing, or permits for railing replacement. Contact your local building department before purchasing materials.

Buying Guide

How to Plan a Deck Railing Project

Step 1: Measure the Perimeter

Measure the total linear feet of railing needed. Walk the perimeter of your deck with a tape measure, subtracting any openings for stairs or house-wall connections. Write down each straight run separately, as you will need to calculate sections for each one.

Step 2: Count Sections

Divide each straight run by the section length (6ft or 8ft). Round up. A 14ft run needs three 6ft sections (you will trim the last one) or two 8ft sections. Railing kits include rails and balusters for one section. Buy one kit per section.

Step 3: Count Posts

You need one post at each end of every straight run, plus one at every corner and at the top and bottom of each stair run. A simple rectangular deck with one stair entry typically needs 6-10 posts. Posts are sold separately from rail kits.

Step 4: Add Stair Sections

Stair railing kits are different from level railing kits. They include angled brackets and longer balusters to accommodate the slope. Measure the stair run length and buy the appropriate stair kit. Most RELIABILT stair kits fit common stair angles between 32 and 38 degrees.

Choosing Composite vs Aluminum

Composite railing costs less upfront and blends well with composite decking boards from any brand. It has a thicker, wood-like profile that suits traditional deck designs. Aluminum railing costs more but lasts longer, weighs less, and has a thinner profile that maximizes the view through the railing. Choose aluminum for coastal areas where salt spray corrodes other materials, or for a modern, minimalist look.

Color Matching with Your Decking

RELIABILT railing in white pairs with nearly any decking color. Black aluminum creates a high-contrast contemporary look against lighter boards. Woodland Brown composite railing matches medium-tone decking from Trex (Saddle, Toasted Sand), TimberTech (Pecan, Mocha), and Fiberon (Ipe, Brown). When in doubt, bring a decking sample to Lowe's and compare in person under natural light.

Installation

Installation Difficulty & When to Hire a Pro

DIY Difficulty: Moderate

Deck railing installation is a moderate DIY project suitable for homeowners with basic tool experience. The primary tools needed are a drill/driver, miter saw (for cutting rails to length), level, tape measure, and socket wrench set (for post bolts). Most RELIABILT railing kits include all brackets, screws, and hardware. Plan for 1-2 hours per section after posts are set.

Post Installation Is the Hard Part

Posts must be structurally attached to the deck frame (rim joist or blocking), not just screwed to the decking surface. This requires through-bolts or approved post-mount brackets rated for the required 200 lb load. Notching the decking around the post base and ensuring plumb alignment takes more skill than attaching the rail sections themselves.

When to Hire a Professional

Consider hiring a deck contractor if your deck frame is old or deteriorated, if you have complex angles or multi-level sections, if your local code requires a permit and inspection, or if you are uncomfortable working at height on an elevated deck. Professional installation typically costs $20-40 per linear foot including materials, compared to $8-15 per linear foot for materials alone on a DIY project.

Coverage

Deck Railing Warranty

RELIABILT composite deck railing carries a limited lifetime warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship, including resistance to rot, splitting, and insect damage. Aluminum railing includes a limited lifetime warranty against rust and structural defects. The finish on aluminum products is typically warranted for 5-10 years against peeling, flaking, and excessive fading.

Warranty claims require proof of purchase from Lowe's. The warranty does not cover damage from improper installation, structural overloading, or normal wear. Deck lights and solar components carry shorter warranties, typically 1-3 years. File claims through Lowe's customer service at 1-800-445-6937 with your receipt, product model number, and photos of the issue.
