How to Choose a RELIABILT Prehung Interior Door

Measure the rough opening, not the old door. A standard 30" prehung door needs a rough opening of approximately 32" x 82". Measure width at the top and bottom, height on both sides, and depth (wall thickness). Standard interior walls are 4.5" deep (2x4 stud + drywall on both sides). If your wall is thicker, you need a door with a wider jamb or jamb extensions.

Choose solid core for bedrooms, bathrooms, and home offices. The STC rating of 30-33 noticeably reduces sound transmission through the door. Hollow core doors transmit conversation-level noise freely. If noise is not a concern (pantry, linen closet, hallway closet), hollow core saves $30-80 per door.

Match the panel style to your home. 6-panel doors are the most common in traditional homes built after 1990. Shaker-style (flat recessed panels with clean edges) suits modern and craftsman interiors. Flat panel (flush) doors are the simplest look and the lowest cost. If you are replacing one door, match the existing style for consistency.

Left-hand vs right-hand swing: Stand on the side the door swings toward you. If the hinges are on the left, it is a left-hand door. If hinges are on the right, it is right-hand. Order the correct hand to match your room layout. Getting the swing direction wrong means the door opens the wrong way and blocks traffic flow.

If your existing frame is in good condition, a slab door saves 30-50% per door. For closet openings, bifold or sliding closet doors are more space-efficient than a swinging prehung door. Consider a barn door or pocket door kit where swing clearance is limited.

Installation

Prehung Door Installation Tips

Remove the shipping brace but leave the door in the frame. Prehung doors ship with a temporary brace holding the door to the frame. Remove the brace but leave the door on its hinges while installing the frame. The door weight keeps the frame square during shimming.

Shim behind all three hinges and the strike plate area. Use pairs of tapered shims from opposite sides to create a flat, adjustable pad. Check plumb on the hinge side first, then adjust the latch side to create an even 1/8" gap all around the door.

Secure the frame with finish nails or trim screws through the shim points. Drive fasteners through the jamb and shims into the studs. Score and snap off the protruding shim ends. Do not nail between shim points or the jamb may bow inward.

Check the door operation before applying casing trim. Open and close the door several times. Verify the latch catches, the door does not swing open on its own, and the reveal (gap) is even around all three sides. Once the casing is nailed on, frame adjustments become much harder.

Apply casing trim starting with the head (top) piece. Cut the head casing to length, nail it in place, then cut and install the two side casings to butt against it. Use 4d or 6d finish nails for the inner edge (into the jamb) and 8d nails for the outer edge (into the stud). Fill nail holes with wood putty and sand smooth before painting.

Troubleshooting

Common Prehung Door Problems and Fixes

Door does not close flush with the frame: The frame is likely not plumb. Remove the casing on the hinge side, add or remove shims behind the hinge locations, and re-check with a level. Even 1/8" out of plumb causes noticeable gaps at the top or bottom of the latch side.

Gap between door and frame is uneven: This is a shimming issue. The gap (called "reveal") should be 1/8" on all three sides. If the top gap is wider on one side, shim behind the upper hinge to push the door outward, or behind the lower hinge on the opposite side to pull it in.

Hollow core door has a dent or hole: Small dents can be filled with lightweight spackle, sanded smooth, and repainted. Holes larger than 1 inch require a more involved repair: fill with expanding foam, trim flush, cover with a thin layer of spackle, sand, and paint. The repair will not match the original texture perfectly.

Hinges squeak: Remove one hinge pin at a time, coat it with silicone lubricant or white lithium grease, and reinsert. Do not remove all three pins simultaneously or the door will fall. If the squeak persists, the hinge knuckle is worn and needs replacement ($3-5 per hinge).

Door swings open or closed on its own: The frame is not plumb. A door that swings open is in a frame that leans toward the hinge side. A door that swings closed leans toward the latch side. The fix is to shim the frame back to plumb, or bend the hinge pin slightly to add friction (remove the pin, place it on a hard surface, and tap the center with a hammer to create a slight bow).

Maintenance

How to Maintain Your Prehung Interior Door

Wipe down with a damp cloth as needed. Interior doors collect dust on the top edge and panel recesses. For primed and painted doors, use mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals that can dull the paint finish.

Repaint every 5-10 years or when scuff marks and wear become visible. Lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper, apply one coat of primer over any exposed substrate, and finish with interior latex paint. Two thin coats look better than one thick coat.

Tighten hinge screws annually. Interior doors swing hundreds of times per week. The top hinge takes the most stress and its screws loosen first. If a screw spins freely, the hole is stripped. Fill with a wooden toothpick and wood glue, let dry, then redrive the screw.

Check the door sweep or bottom clearance on bathroom doors. Building code requires 1/2" to 3/4" clearance above finished flooring for ventilation. If you install new flooring (adding height), you may need to trim the bottom of the door to restore clearance.

Inspect the frame for seasonal movement in older homes. Houses settle over decades, and door frames can shift out of square. If doors that once closed properly start sticking or showing uneven gaps, the frame has likely moved. Reshim the frame rather than planing the door, as planing treats the symptom while the frame continues to shift.

Protect doors during construction or renovation. Dust, paint overspray, and drywall compound damage door finishes. Cover installed prehung doors with plastic sheeting during any nearby renovation work. Remove the knobs and store them separately to prevent paint drips on the hardware.

Clean painted doors with a damp microfiber cloth. For stubborn marks, use a melamine sponge (Magic Eraser) lightly on flat surfaces, but avoid it on textured or semi-gloss finishes where it can dull the sheen. Never use solvent-based cleaners on primed or painted MDF doors.

FAQ

Prehung Interior Door Questions

How long does it take to install a prehung interior door?

A DIY installation takes 30-60 minutes per door with basic tools (level, shims, drill, finish nails). The frame is pre-assembled, so you set it in the rough opening, shim it plumb and level, screw or nail the frame to the studs, and add casing trim. No hinge mortising or drilling is needed since everything is pre-cut.

Do RELIABILT prehung doors come with casing trim?

No. RELIABILT prehung interior doors include the slab, frame (jambs and header), and hinges. Door casing (the decorative trim around the frame) is sold separately. See RELIABILT moulding for matching casing options. You will also need to purchase a door knob or lever separately.

Can I cut a prehung door to fit a shorter opening?

You can trim the jamb legs (side pieces) and the door slab to fit a shorter opening. Remove equal amounts from both jamb legs to keep the door centered. Hollow core doors can only be trimmed about 1" before you cut into the hollow section. Solid core doors can be trimmed up to 2" safely. If you need to remove more, a custom-size door is the better option.

What is the difference between a passage knob and a privacy knob?

Passage knobs have no lock and turn freely from both sides. Use them for hallways, living rooms, and closets. Privacy knobs have a push-button or turn-button lock on the interior side and an emergency release on the exterior. Use them for bedrooms and bathrooms. Both types fit the same bore hole in a RELIABILT prehung door. See RELIABILT door knobs for options.

Prehung doors need passage or privacy knobs (sold separately). Finish the installation with door casing moulding around the frame. For doors where you already have a good frame, see slab-only doors instead.

When replacing all interior doors in a home, buy in bulk from Lowe's for potential volume pricing. Confirm every rough opening is the same size before ordering identical doors. Older homes often have varying rough opening widths between rooms, so measure each one individually.

For rooms where swing clearance is an issue, consider a pocket door kit or barn door as an alternative to a standard swinging prehung door. Both options eliminate the door swing footprint entirely.
