RELIABILT Moulding & Trim

Primed MDF and finger-joint pine baseboard, casing, crown moulding, appearance boards, and wall planks. Standard profiles in 8ft and 12ft lengths, ready to paint and install. Sold exclusively at Lowe's.

RELIABILT moulding and trim is Lowe's house brand line of interior finishing products. The range covers baseboard, door and window casing, crown moulding, shoe moulding, appearance boards, and wall planks. Materials are primed MDF and primed finger-joint pine. Pricing runs from $0.20 to $4.00 per linear foot depending on profile and size.

Moulding is the finishing step after installing new doors or replacement windows. Door and window casing frames the opening, baseboard covers the wall-to-floor joint, and crown moulding adds a finished look at the ceiling line. RELIABILT trim is designed to coordinate with their door and window products for a cohesive finish throughout your home. For pre-made door trim sets, see the door trim accessories guide.

MDF vs Finger-Joint Pine

FactorPrimed MDFFinger-Joint Pine
ProsSmooth, consistent surface. No grain, knots, or telegraphing through paint. Resists warping and splitting. Lower cost per foot.Real wood feel and weight. Lighter than MDF, easier to handle overhead. Can be sanded and stained. Holds nails better.
ConsHeavy, especially in long lengths. Swells and deteriorates if exposed to moisture. Cannot be stained. Edges chip if dropped.Slight grain visible through paint if under-primed. Finger joints may telegraph over time. Costs 20-40% more than MDF.
Best UsesPainted baseboard, casing, and crown in climate-controlled rooms. Living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, dining rooms.Overhead crown moulding (lighter weight). Any trim you may stain instead of paint. Rooms where you want real wood character.
Moisture WarningDo not use in bathrooms, laundry rooms, or below-grade spaces. MDF swells permanently when wet.More moisture-tolerant than MDF but still not rated for wet areas. Use PVC or solid wood trim in bathrooms.

For most interior painting projects, MDF is the better value. It takes paint more evenly and never shows wood grain or knots. Choose finger-joint pine when you need a lighter-weight piece for crown moulding installation or plan to stain the trim.

Buying Guide

How to Choose & Estimate RELIABILT Moulding

Choosing the Right Profile for Your Home's Style

Match your moulding profile to your home's architectural style. Colonial profiles (ogee curves and stepped details) suit traditional homes. Craftsman profiles (flat faces with minimal curves) work for bungalows and arts-and-crafts interiors. Ranch or flat-stock profiles pair with modern and mid-century designs. The key rule: keep the same profile family throughout the house. Mixing colonial baseboard with craftsman casing looks inconsistent.

Estimating Material: How Many Feet Per Room

Measure the perimeter of each room in feet for baseboard. Subtract the width of each doorway (typically 3 feet per opening). Add 10% for waste from cuts and miters. A standard 12x12 room needs about 44 linear feet of baseboard after subtracting one doorway. For door casing, measure the perimeter of each door opening (two sides plus the top). A standard 80" door needs about 17 feet of casing per side, so 34 feet total if casing both sides. Crown moulding uses the full room perimeter with no deductions.

Matching Baseboard to Casing to Crown

Keep proportions balanced. If you use 5-1/4" baseboard, pair it with 3-1/2" casing and 3-5/8" or larger crown. With 3-1/4" baseboard, use 2-1/4" casing and 2-5/8" crown. The baseboard should always be the tallest or equal to the crown. Casing should be narrower than both. Buy all three from the same profile family (colonial, craftsman, or ranch) for a coordinated look.

Tool Requirements

You will need a miter saw (10" for baseboard and casing, 12" compound miter for crown moulding), an 18-gauge brad nailer with 1-1/2" to 2" brads, a coping saw for inside corner joints on baseboard and crown, a tape measure, and wood filler for nail holes. A pneumatic or cordless brad nailer makes the job significantly faster than hand nailing. A coping saw is essential -- coped inside corners stay tight even as the house settles, while mitered inside corners tend to open up over time.

Important

Moisture & MDF Warning

Do Not Use MDF Moulding in Wet Areas

MDF swells permanently and deteriorates when exposed to moisture. Do not install RELIABILT MDF moulding in bathrooms with showers or tubs, laundry rooms, mudrooms with exterior drainage issues, or any below-grade (basement) application where humidity is not controlled. Use PVC trim, solid wood, or composite alternatives in these spaces. Finger-joint pine is more forgiving than MDF but is still not rated for continuous moisture exposure.

If MDF trim is already installed in a damp area and shows swelling at the bottom edge, it cannot be repaired. The affected pieces must be removed and replaced with a moisture-appropriate material.

Coverage

Moulding Warranty

RELIABILT moulding and trim products carry a limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty does not cover damage from moisture exposure (including MDF swelling), improper installation, or normal wear and tear. Primed products must be painted or sealed within a reasonable time after installation to maintain coverage.
